15 years ago while I was still in school and going to US was my ultimate dream. Going to US back then was like finding your Utopia. If you had an aunt or an uncle abroad, you were considered to be amongst the elite amongst their friends. I am now well out of college and trying to find directions for my life. In short I am working and trying to make a place for myself amongst millions of aspiring youngsters like me. Times have changed now. Going to US is no longer considered as the ultimate dream. Neither is it so tough these days to get to a foreign country unless you are not connected to the IT industry in India. So where am I getting at with my beating around the bush. All I want to say is India has arrived and here to stay for some time to come. India is gearing upto take on the next step in every field but most importantly socially.

When I say India has to gear up, I am not talking of the infrastructural development or poliltical stability that has been the topic of interest for everyone. I am talking about us, the citizens of India. Are we ready to leap frog into the future? That includes me as well.

I was having this petty conversation with a friend of mine who had returned from Canada recently. He was telling of an incident where the cars moved out of the way when they heard a ambulance beeping behind them and stayed put for sometime till the ambulance was safely on its way. Do you think we in India can follow the same principle voluantarily, I mean without a government law being passed. I don’t think I can. Whenever I see a narrow gap in traffic, my first instinct is to plug it with my vehicle so that I can squeeze out before the rest. I dont remember the last time I ever followed lane discipline. Maybe there is no one who does it as well in India. You might say the laws guiding in western countries are stronger than ours. Well even in India we have laws stating to follow lane discipline. But how many of us do follow it even if it means breaking them is going to cost us?

This kind of community feeling is being followed in every walk of life in most of the western countries while we still dwell in the past arguing about our superior culture. I agree we have a strong family orientation and a culture which asks us to be more disciplined. But have we ever followed our culture as well? Other than not moving away from the shade of our parents telling that we are more family oriented or hanging on to culture when you fail to take an enterprising step. But everyone including me have failed to follow the disciplinary life style our culture guides us to follow. I don’t remember the last time I visited a temple. How many of us do? Well doesn’t your culture ask you to frequent a temple? Well, its no fun to follow culture if it binds us to a more disciplinary lifestyle.

If we are so very superior to other cultures why do we fail to maintain a feeling of harmony to a fellow citizen. How many times have we stood up for the rights of a downtrodden or a person who has faced injustice? We have people rallying for some glam girl or rallying for their relegion. How many times have we rallied for a person regardless of his caste or relegion? How is our culture superior when we are yet to give something to the world which we can be proud of? Other than the achievements of the past, what new contributions have we given to the world? How many of us would dare to explore the  unknown? If we are blaming the people at the helm of governmental affairs, then who elected these people? Agreed they do some arm twisting to get into power, but do we at least support someone who voices his disgust over the system?

As India is moving towards a more worldly image, I feel its time we started reflecting on ourselves and started to contribute even if its in a small way. Be polite to your fellow citizens even if he is the waiter of a shanty restaurant. Stop throwing filth around your neighbourhood. Stop spitting on roads. Follow traffic signals and traffic signs. Let way for the ambulances. Try not to be totally aloof to someone’s grief, develop a community feeling for your fellow citizens regardless of caste and creed. Be proud of your country and your language and not be too regionalistic. There maybe other small things which you can do right rather than waiting for someone else to start it off. You might read this and ignore it as is going to be the case. Well it might be hard for me to break out of the rust I have covered myself with, but I hope to shake it off. Hope I stand for what I have written.

Is Apple bruising its image?

Apple has been a darling to its fans. Especially Apple’s CEO Steve Jobs has developed a rock star image amongst Apple’s ardent, head strong fans. Me being a fan of anything affordable and functional have failed to fathom the blind faith and the partisan nature of the mac loyalists. Differences apart, apple maybe on its way to bruise its darling image with its fans because of what may turn out to be its corporate misdeeds. Click on the link to know more about this,

As is the case with all the mac loyalists I have seen, the misdeeds might be interpreted as a management master strokes by these fans. Hard to get in touch with the reality isn’t it?

Indian outsourcing giants Wipro have planned to expand their 2000 strong work force in the UK by adding 500 more in 2007. The concept of less Indian more global seems to be catching up with the Indian majors, and Wipro aims to target the low cost parts in the UK like Birmingham, other than their existing setups in Reading.

Its finally time that the Brits woke up from their slumber and recongnised India as a major source of resource providers in the coming years and not just an outsourcing destination. Hope the lousy and lazy Brits shed their colonial clout from their heads and start respecting other cultures as well. Say what Jade Goody?

‘Mach c’? Scientists observe sound traveling faster than the speed of light from PhysOrg.com
For the first time, scientists have experimentally demonstrated that sound pulses can travel at velocities faster than the speed of light, c. William Robertson’s team from Middle Tennessee State University also showed that the group velocity of sound waves can become infinite, and even negative.

A team of UCLA and California Institute of Technology chemists have developed a memory circuit of the size of a white blood cell capable of storing the entire American Declaration of Independence with some more space left over. The memory circuit is the densest memory circuit built to date with a capacity of 160 Kilobytes.

Test for String Theory

String theory for the less informed, is the latest theory going around in the field of Physics, which assumes that the entire universe is made of tiny one dimensional particles called Strings. String theory brings into picture the concept of mulitple dimensions (more than the four dimensions of time and position that we already know of) as well as the concept of parallel universe.

Since being introduced to the topic by a friend of mine, I have been kind of keenly following on this theory and have turned into some kind of an advocate of the theory as well (in my friends circle at least). Till date String theory has just been restricted to the confines of books in the form of Formulas and hypothesis. No one has till date been able to prove the existance of Strings. However ever since the theory gained momentum as the next biggest theory since Einstein’s theory of relativity and theories on time and matter, people have tried to prove it practically but in vein. Fermi Labs in the USA has even set up a mile long particle accelerator to extract that one elusive string from fast moving and colliding electrons but without any luck.

Now, the researchers at the University of California, San Diego, Carnegie Mellon University, and The University of Texas at Austin have now developed an important test for this controversial “theory of everything.” Read more on the same in the link below,

http://www.physorg.com/news88786651.html

If the test turns fruitful it would be the first step towards a revolutionary change in the world of science, Physics in particualar, as we know it. It would turn Einstein’s theories of time and matter upside down and usher in a new theory which would have unified all the theories into one.

Found a cool site to get the latest information about all the latest and the coolest tech updates. Also, learn more about the latest and the coolest gadgets in town. Click on the link below to browse the site,

Agreed there are far better and more informed sites like engadget, ZDNet etc. which gives you better and more information about the latest in the world of technology. But, I have a penchant to look for smaller and neater sites which serves the purpose whilst not being cluttered with unwanted info. A good look through if you are not looking for exact and detailed descriptions.

Just in case you are still unfamiliar with an Apple mac machine, here is a feature on mac which has kind of appealed to me. Considering that I am an avid PC user and kind of a Windows loyalist, it is really surprising to even me that I am impressed with this feature on mac.

Smart Folders is a feature on mac which allows you to logically group similar files on your machine. For example you want to group all your images or your documents, all you need to do is open your Finder window. Select New Smart Folder from the File menu. You will get a window where you can search for all the similar files based on various different option. Hit on the save button and your smart folder will be saved in the location you specify with the name you specify. It is kind of like a saved search on various websites, where in you get to save your search results for future use. Moreover, once you have created your Smart Folder you can optionally add the Smart Folder to your sidebar on the Finder window, which again helps you to organize and find your files on your mac. You might argue you can always search for the files you need using spotlight as it is fast and efficient. But then these are small little features which makes your life much more easier and lets you marvel at the product you are using.

Smart Folders, although a cool feature, is one of the least used features. I guess this is the case always with mac, although they provide you with the sleekest and the coolest new innovations they are so inaccessible that people just look at them in awe settling for the more accessible but less cooler stuff (which works fine for them unless they decide to turn into a hostile mac loyalist). Spoken like a true PC fan…
